Dingwall Players are performing their pantomime in the Town Hall for the first time since 2009
Ongoing improvements to the, noted list B, building mean that the Christmas show will return to the place traditionally used by the Players for many years, dating back to the re founding of the club in 1947. Although work on the building continues to be done it was decided that with the instalment of a lift and accessible toilets now in place, the time was right to recreate the great atmosphere that the hall can provide.
Dingwall Players are busy rehearsing “Santa in Space – A Christmas Pantomime Adventure” by Paul Reakes. As the title suggests this is a different topic for such a show, but Director Allan Thomson assures us that all the elements of panto will be forthcoming, booing, audience participation, nasty villain and heroes not to mention the indomitable Dame Dangle, played by Stewart MacPherson. Without giving too much of the plot away planet Earth and Santa are in the grip of the evil Vile Un and incompetent henchmen, Null and Void – can Dame Dangle Crystal, Dick Daring and Roberta the Robot save the day and Christmas! Tickets go on sale on November 7th!!!

The Duck Variations is a 1972 play
by American playwright David Mamet.
Have you ever sat by a lake and watched the ducks, and wondered what it is like
to be a duck? Do ducks have problems and worries – besides the obvious one of
being shot at? Are there similarities between the lives of humans and those of
ducks?
These questions and more are considered in Dingwall Players latest production,
‘The Duck Variations’ by David Mamet. Mamet is an American playwright
probably best known for ‘Glengarry, Glen Ross’ – recently staged to critical
acclaim in London’s West End.
‘The Duck Variations’ features a mixed group of characters and a live cellist in a
darkly comic, short play presented as fourteen scenes, or variations. The
production formed the centre piece of two evenings’ entertainment in the
relaxed atmosphere of at the National Hotel. Both evenings also included music
song, and a modern dance piece by the newly formed plan B Young Company.

LUNCH GIRLS
THE EDINBURGH FRINGE
So, the great Fringe adventure is over! And what an adventure! We had a great venue (thanks to all at Space @ Surgeon’s Hall), time slot and poster image (thanks Donna). We registered with the Fringe at the earliest opportunity and couldn’t believe it when we had sold 30 tickets on line in February! In fact by the time we actually got to Edinburgh we had sold nearly 200 out of a possible 330 tickets, and by the end of the 6 performance run we had played to 90% capacity – not bad for an unknown community theatre group. Yes there was good support from friends and family but plenty of others who took a punt on the show. On the last night we were honoured to have the late Ron Hart’s wife Carmel (pictured with the Director) and son Gideon in the audience who were fulsome in their praise of the production – and the company tee-shirts! Playing to nearly full houses was a real boost for the confidence of the cast (Ali Wood, Liz Mclardy, Tina Fewster and Kirstine Thomson) who rose to the occasion and did themselves and the club proud. Our early evening time slot meant that a few shows could be taken in during the day and after a performance there was plenty of time for more shows, food and the odd glass or two in The Joker and the Thief which became our unofficial green room. A few thanks are due to Peter Whiteley for being Stage Manager, and Matthew and Catriona Jeorrett and Allan Thomson for Front of House duties. Here’s to the next time! Nick Fearne Director |
Lunch Girls deals with the lives of four middle-class British women, but strikes a chord with audiences around the world. The comedy has been translated into Greek, Danish, German, Hebrew, Japanese and Polish, with productions across the globe including Los Angeles, Tokyo, Jerusalem and Bombay as well as at the National Theatre, London and a national tour starring Sylvia Syms.. Lunch Girls was a joint winner of the 1983 Verity Bargate award for new, unperformed, short plays and is suitable for production in a small theatre. It is published by Methuen in Theatre Script Series No. 15.
From an early age Ron Hart displayed a gift for writing, but on leaving school at 14 took a job in the City, subsequently setting up his own business. Although established in the insurance world, he continued to write throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Early plays performed in London include THREE DUETS (Little Theatre Club, St Martins Lane) and Table Service (Act Inn, London). His work included the screenplay for the John Berger film A Fortunate Man. His play BOOK DEPOSITORY BLUES was winner of the Oxford University Experimental Drama Award. It was only when his play Lunch Girls won the Verity Bargate award in 1982 that recognition came. Nick Fearne with Carmel Hart |

Peter became musical director of the Fatfield Junior Operatic Society (now the Rainbow Youth Theatre) in 1996. He then became Director-Chairman of the Washington Theatre Group from 2000 to 2005. He wrote, directed and produced his first stage show at the age of 26, a musical called 'Dark Heart', which was first staged by the Washington Theatre Group in 2001 and again in 2003.He is a prolific producer of Stage Plays, Novels, Short Stories , Pantomimes ...
Peter wrote the following:
"I write about things that make me laugh. I write things I'd like to read if other people had written them. I write about things I know, things I've actually done or been around and involved in. I was Chairman of the Washington Theatre Group which gave me a chance to 'persuade' the group to perform some of the plays I'd scribbled down when I really should have been doing other things. When they were well received by audiences it spurred me on to write more. My first play 'Cinderella and the Pantomime Thief' was published by Lazybee Scripts in 2005.I'm grateful to each and every person who buys and reads one of my books. The positive feedback I receive makes every 3am 'must-get-this-chapter-finished' session and 9th cup of coffee of the day worth while."
